Do you need a Facebook login for the WhatsApp Business API? What 'Continue with Facebook' asks

What the Facebook window asks you to do when you connect a WhatsApp number, which two permissions it gives an app, what you keep, and how to remove the access later. Based on Meta's own pages, read 31 Oct 2026.

To connect a number through SendFromChat you click Continue with Facebook, and a Facebook window opens. Per our docs you need "a Facebook login that can manage your Meta business", and the window is where you pick your business and your number. This page walks through what that window asks, what access you give, and how to take it back. We found no Meta page that describes a way around Facebook, so we don't claim one.

SendFromChat is an independent product and is not affiliated with Meta or WhatsApp. Meta's rules change. Where this page quotes Meta, it says which page and when we read it; check the current page before you act on it.

What you need before you click

From our getting started docs:

  • A number that isn't on the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. Use a new number, or move yours off the app first (WhatsApp Business app vs API).
  • A Facebook login that can manage your Meta business. You sign in through Facebook's own window; there is no Meta developer app to create.
  • A card on your WhatsApp Business account before you send templates. Meta bills it directly, separate from your SendFromChat plan.

The full checklist, with Meta's rules for numbers and display names, is in WhatsApp Business API requirements.

What the window asks, in order

Our docs describe it this way: in Facebook's own window, sign in, choose your business (or create one) and pick your number, or add a new one and confirm the code Meta sends it. The window closes and the number is connected, with replies, delivery receipts and templates working straight away. Per our docs that takes about two minutes once you're in the window; it depends on how fast the code arrives.

Meta's Embedded Signup overview (page marked "Updated: Oct 29, 2026", read in a browser 31 Oct 2026) lists what the window lets a business do. We read it as Meta's description of the general flow, not of our screens:

  • "authenticate their identity using their Facebook or Meta Business Credentials"
  • "accept terms of service for Cloud API, WhatsApp Business, Meta, …"
  • "grant your app access to their WhatsApp assets"
  • "select an existing business portfolio or create a new one"
  • "select an existing WhatsApp account (WAAC) or create a new one"
  • "enter and verify their business phone number"
  • "enter a display name that can appear in place of their number in the WhatsApp client"

Which of these you see depends on what you already have. If you already have a business portfolio and WhatsApp account, you select them; if not, you create them.

What access you give

Meta's overview says that for the Cloud API flow an app needs two permissions. Meta's permissions reference (read in a browser 31 Oct 2026) describes them like this:

  • whatsapp_business_management "allows your app to read and/or manage WhatsApp business assets you own or have been granted access to by other businesses through this permission. These business assets include WhatsApp Business Accounts, business phone numbers, message templates, QR codes and their associated messages, and webhook subscriptions."
  • whatsapp_business_messaging "allows an app to send WhatsApp messages and make calls to a specific phone number, upload and retrieve media from messages, manage and get WhatsApp business profile information, and to register those phone numbers with Meta."

In plain words: the first covers the account, numbers and templates; the second covers sending, media and the business profile. This page does not list every permission an app may ask for; the window shows what is being requested.

What stays yours

Meta's overview says "Business customers onboarded via Embedded Signup own all of their WhatsApp assets" and have "full access to WhatsApp Manager". So, per Meta, the business owns its WhatsApp assets. Existing WhatsApp accounts that were created through a developer app can't be selected in this flow, per the same page.

How to take the access back

Facebook's Help Centre page "How do I edit the privacy and settings for my business integrations or remove them from Facebook?" (read in a browser 31 Oct 2026) gives these steps:

  1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook.
  2. Select Settings and privacy, then Settings.
  3. Click Business integrations on the left.
  4. Open the Active list, pick the integration, click Remove, then Remove again. Or click View and edit to change what it can access.

Facebook says a removed integration "can no longer manage your ads, Pages, groups, events, or messages" but "may have information that you've previously shared". We haven't tested what removing it does to a number already connected in SendFromChat. If you want to disconnect a number, ask us first through the contact page.

If the window won't open or the code doesn't arrive

That is covered in WhatsApp number won't connect?, including ad blockers that stop Facebook's window loading and numbers that can't receive a code.
